Swim Meet 101

BEFORE THE MEET STARTS

  1. Arrive at the pool at least 15 minutes before our scheduled warm-up time begins. This time should be listed in meet information on the website and or as directed by the coach.
  2. Upon arrival, find a place to put your swimmer's gear. The team usually sits in one place together, so look for some familiar faces.  We will share information on where the home team has requested the we sit for away meets prior to each meet.  For home meets, our team area is on the pool deck directly in front of the bathrooms, under the 4 umbrellas. Depending on which events your swimmers are participating in there may be some down time during the meet – bring water/gators/snacks and something for the swimmers to do (i.e. card games).
  3. Make sure your swimmer checks in with a coach! Heat and lane assignments will be posted near our team sitting area, so be sure your swimmer knows where to look! We will also e-mail the swimmer’s entries or heat sheets prior to the meet, but may not be sent out until that afternoon depending on when we receive the opposing team's entries.
  4. Write or have the swimmers write each event (E), heat (H) and lane (L) number on their arm. See image below. This helps them remember what events they are swimming and what event number to listen or watch for. It will also help the coaches to help the swimmer find their location.
  5. Warm ups: it is very important for swimmers to warm up with the team. The coaches will direct swimmers on where to go and what to do.
  6. After warm-up, your swimmer will go back to the area where his/her team is sitting and wait there until his first event is called. This is a good time to make sure he/she goes to the bathroom if necessary, gets a drink, or just gets settled in.
  7. The meet will usually start about 10-15 minutes after warm-ups are over.
  8. Heat Sheets - It lists all swimmers in each event in order of "seed time". When the team entry is sent in, each swimmer and his/her previous best time (up to the date that the entry was submitted) in that event is listed. If the swimmer is swimming an event for the first time, he/she will be entered as a "no-time" or "NT". A "no-time" swimmer will most likely swim in one of the first heats of the event. A Heat sheet may be available close to the start of the meet that lists the actual heat and lane a swimmer will be competing in.
  9. Parents who have volunteered their time will report to their respective areas. Please see a team parent rep. if you are unsure where to go. For parents who volunteer as Timers or Stroke and Turn judges, there will be a timer and stroke/turn judge meeting about 15 minutes prior to the start of the meet.  An announcement will be made with more information on where to meet and when.

DURING THE MEET

  1. It is important for swimmers to know what event they are swimming in. There can be long lags between events or sometimes, only a few events. Swimmers need to pay attention make sure to report to their lane a few events early.
  2. Coaches will help line swimmers up for relays as some swimmers will start at the turn end of the pool.
  3. It takes many volunteers and various jobs for a meet to be successful for the swimmers. Sometimes the start end of the pool can be crowded. There will be a timer from each team in each lane to make sure that we have correct times. There are stroke and turn officials that judge the swimmers strokes.  Please be respectful of these volunteers.
  4. Please make sure that you are respectful of the facility and clean up after yourself.
  5. Results are usually emailed or posted on the website.  If you chose to receive ribbons they will be given out at practice on Friday, with doughnuts!

CONCESSIONS

We typically have pizza, Chick-fil-a sandwiches, as well as homemade goodies and other snacks for sale during the meet. Please support our team by purchasing from concessions.
